After being announced at the THQ Nordic Showcase 2024 event, it’s confirmed that Wreckfest 2 will launch on Steam Early Access in March 2025.
Available from March 20th, it’s been revealed that races will be against up to 23 other players or AI, and that there will be racing and derby modes as in the original, but powered by an overhauled physics engine. And you’ll be able to upgrade and customise your cars similar to the past, but later during the early access period, you’ll be able to share your designs.
The early access launch will include multiplayer, but with the new addition of skill-based matchmaking and server queues, both of which will add a new element to the online experience of Wreckfest. And tournaments will be coming with special events and unique rewards, along with mod support.

There’s no word on how many fictional cars and tracks will be included, although more will be added as the game evolves during early access.
One of the big improvements could be the ‘completely revamped’ career mode, as the original could get a bit repetitive as you went through the various series with only the final special events usually included new or unusual vehicles like lawn mowers, school buses and combine harvesters.
And the prospect of skill-based matchmaking could be a reason to continue coming back to the online multiplayer after you’ve completed all the achievements, levelled up every car, and finished everything else.

The original Wreckfest was released initially for the PC by Bugbear all the way back in 2018, before coming to Xbox One and PS4 in 2019, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2021, and Nintendo Switch in 2022. And the sequel will also be coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at some point in the future.
Having played through Wreckfest multiple times after it launched on both Steam and later on Xbox and PC GamePass, the changes to both single and multiplayer are both sensible and welcome ones. And the trailers and videos shown so far demonstrate some additional driver animations and graphics upgrades which probably needed by now. The initial announcement trailer also included driver voice lines, which could be a good way to annoy your online rivals if they don’t start to irritate you first.
You can wishlist Wreckfest 2 for the PC via Steam Early Access now ahead of the March 20th, 2025 release date. And keep up to date with the latest news, updates and more, including as the game progresses through Early Access, here.
