We knew Genki planned to bring back the iconic racing franchise after almost 20 years, but it’s arriving sooner than expected as Tokyo Xtreme Racer launches on Steam in January 2025.
It’s currently scheduled to arrive as an Early Access title on January 23rd, and at release it will include a playable story mode up to roughly halfway through the game, with a focus on SP battle, car tuning and player skill gains, with more than 200 rival characters, 50 playable cars and over 180 kilometres of the Shuto Expressway to race on.
There’s no details yet on when a full release is planned beyond an estimate of around four months, but it will include additional storylines, vehicles and rival characters. And while prices have not been revealed, anyone purchasing the Early Access will get the full release without paying any more.

The announcement by Genki talks about choosing ‘PC first’, suggesting console versions will also be on the way.
So far, six offically licensed cars have been announced for Tokyo Xtreme Racer, with the Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II, Toyota Supra RZ, Mazda RX-7 Type RZ, Toyota GR86 RZ, Toyota Levin GT-APEX AE86, and the Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C. Along with a long list of parts companies currently including BBS, Blitz, Do-Luck, Enkei, Rays and loads more. So you should be able to tweak and tune your car to the exact look and feel you want. Various rivals are also being revealed in the run-up to early acess, with the likes Rolling Guy No. 1, Melancholic Angel and more.
A demo was playable at the Fuel Fest event in America before Christmas, and the first Gameplay footage has also recently been revealed.
So there should be a fair amount to try out when Tokyo Xtreme Racer launches on Steam in January 2025, 31 years after the original Shutoko Battle ’94 was released, and 19 years after Import Tuner Challenge was the last console release in the series.
