After arriving in Early Access on Steam in October 2023, Open Wheel Manager 2 gets a full release on Steam with the arrival of the V1.0 update.
Developed by Paprikash Games, and published by Microprose, the latest update adds a youth academy which allows you to sign drivers from a young age, save optimisation for the amount of data especially when you’re running 10 or more seasons, Mod.io integration, and the opportunity to choose between building up your own garagista private team or work with a full factory outfit.
There’s a 25% discount on the normal retail price of £16.75, meaning you can pick up Open Wheel Manager 2 for £12.56 until 31st December 2024, or bundled with the 2019 original title in the series.
Other recent improvements include manage ages and skills being introduced, allowing you to progress over time and even reinvest your earnings. So you can now sell shares in your team, or buy a a part other teams, managing the one you have the highest controlling stake in. Which is an interesting feature, given the wheeler dealing that went on with F1 team owners in the 1970s and 1980s in particular.
As just one real life example, March Engineering started in 1969 with four founders. Max Mosely went on to become president of FISA and the FIA after also co-founding Simtek. Alan Rees moved to Shadow and co-founded Arrows. Robin Herd previously worked at McLaren and then returned to F1 for a brief period with Leyton House and formed March Indy International in the Indy Racing League.
Most of the mods currently available recreate historic F1 championships from 1973 until 2024 currently represented. And the most popular one currently in the 1999 season which seems fairly appropriate
Other game balance adjustments including car setup becoming more influential on race weekend performance, driver salary demands being tweaked and more, with fairly frequent updates appearing throughout 2024.
