The first entry in the long-running monster truck game franchise to be developed by Italian developers Milestone has arrived as Monster Jam Showdown launches for PC and consoles.
After starting with Monster Jam: Maximum Destruction in 2002, various developers have been involved in the series, most recently Rainbow Studios. Now it’s the turn of Milestone, who have typically concentrated on motorcycle games, along with the Hot Wheels Unleashed titles.
Presumably that commitment to the Feld licensed monster truck series is why Mattel have ended up picking 3D Clouds and GameMill for Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem, which is due out in October, 2024.
As an arcade racing title, Monster Jam Showdown is developed in Unreal Engine 5, and includes 40 official trucks at launch, with 26 more coming via free or premium DLC, and a choice of more than 140 paints. And you’ll be able to use them in the single-player Showdown Tour which takes place in real-life venues and three original environments inspired by Death Valley, the Colorado mountains and Alaska, as you compete in freestyle and head-to-head competitions. You’ll also have to deal with destructible objects and extreme weather conditions.
Multiplayer includes split-screen location action and two online-only events featuring 10 different game modes, with global leaderboards to track your ranking.
You’ll need to make use of a combo system in the freestyle mode to build up your score, with backslips, wheelies, donuts and more all possible to increase your multiplier.
As you probably expect for almost any game in modern times, a Season Pass is available for Monster Jam Showdown, which offers 17 new trucks, 6 tracks and 1 new arena between now and February 2025. And the locations are probably revealed by the name of the Aloha Expansion, due out in December 2024.
Monster Jam Showdown is available now for the PC via Steam or the Epic Game Store. You can find it on the Microsoft Store for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the PlayStation Store for the PS4 and PS5, and the Nintendo eShop for the Switch, currently priced at £44.99 on all platforms. Physical console editions are available via Game, including the Day One Edition, and Amazon, which currently has the lowest prices of all the physical and digital versions.
