A late and fairly rare European-only release for the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles is set to return next year, as Atari brings back Fatal Run 2089 for release in 2025 on PC, Switch, PlayStation and Xbox.
The original Fatal Run was developed by Sculptered Software, and one of the final two titles officially released for the Atari 2600 back in 1990. And it was also the largest with 32kB of data. Like that game, the new Fatal Run 2089 is also set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.
34 years later, developed MNSTR Studio are using Unreal Engine 5 to let you transport advanced clean energy devices across an Earth covered in deadly radiation. There are four distinct global regions, with a total of 20 levels at launch, each with branching paths, hidden shortcuts and explosive set pieces. And you’ll have to race against the clock, and also fight off other drivers with weapons or collisions to take them out. And each region has a boss who also needs defeating.
You’ll be able to choose from a selection of seven vehicles to take on each run, and use in-game currency to add upgrades and modifications.
Fatal Run will launch for the PC via Steam and Epic Games, the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in 2025. You’ll be able to keep up with all the latest Fatal Run 2089 news, updates and more, here.
If you fancy trying the original in the meantime, you can find cartridges on eBay. A limited edition of new cartidges is also available from Atari for shipping in the US only. Or various emulators online.
