You’ll soon have another choice if you want to become a virtual mechanic, with Car Repair announced for a Steam release in 2024. The interesting twist is that it’s set in Poland in the 1990s, and you have the choice to potentially pick cheaper both jobs and fixes rather than the proper and more expensive ways to gets cars back on the road.
So rather than just following the steps to make a perfect repair or fit a replacement part, you’ll be trying to look for savings and balance cost with avoiding making customers angry. Whether that’s mixing petrol with water, or simply painting over rust. And you may need to also defend yourself from upset owners returning to your garage, which is in a typical housing estate of the time.
The freedom to choose how you make repairs, and whether you try to cut time and costs is a good way for Car Repair to stand out in the fairly well-populated car mechanic sim genre. But independent Polish studio Little Dog Games will still need to make sure the gameplay stands up. It appears to be their first release, so it’s hard to predict whether it’ll be good or not. But hopefully we’ll find out later this year.
There have been retro 1990s-themed car building games released in the past, most notably Finnish-based My Summer Car, which originally came out in 2016, and is still available through Early Access. A sequel, My Winter Car, was announced in 2020, but there’s been no information or cryptic teasers shared for it in a couple of years.
Car Repair is likely to be released in Q4 2024, and you can find it for the PC on Steam to add it to your wishlist.
