Following on from the initial Cammus C5 single unit sim racing wheel and base in one, now there’s a more powerful force feedback option, with the Cammus C12 Direct Drive Wheel launched for pre-orders.
Like the C5 it uses an external rotor design that saves space but also claims to provide less inertia and more responsive and detailed feedback when you’re driving. And it also means a lower price point, with the C5 currently on sale at $249.99 down from the $349 list price, and the Cammus C12 Wheel currently listed at $499 with a $50 deposit, down from the regular list price of $699.
The normal price of $699 works out at roughly £552 at the current exchange rate, comparable with the Moza R12 at £589, or a Fanatec ClubSport DD at £686. But both of those options also require a wheel, adding £100+ to the price. And at the initial sale price of $499, that works out at £394.25.
You also get more functionality than with the C5, as the new C12 offers a multifunction display, 10 backlit buttons, two 12-position switches, both an analogue and a directional joystick, and two rotary encoders. The leather wrapped wheel is built from aluminium alloy with two magnetic carbon fibre shift paddles.
Most interesting is that the Cammus C12 features an interchangeable steering wheel compatible with standard 6x70mm patterns. So while there’s no quick release system, you can unbolt the centre mount, and swap the wheel, which was a drawback of the integrated design used with the C5.
What you don’t get is a desk clamp, but if you’re planning on using 12Nm of feedback, it’s probably a good time to invest in a sim racing cockpit or stand. As with the C5, it’s supplied with a T-bracket and an ancillary cooling fan which you mount behind the wheel.
