While I’d debate the popular opinion that iRacing is too expensive for most people, it’s about to become better value in 2024 Season 2, with four more circuits to join the iRacing membership package.
You already get around 33 circuits included in a standard subscription, including the Centripetal test track and some legancy versions of venues including Silverstone, Texas Motor Speedway and Pocono. But you’ll get four more road courses to drive, previously available as additional paid content on iRacing.
The four circuits being added to the membership package are Circuit de Ledenon, Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Snetterton Circuit and Winton Motor Speedway. If you’ve previously bought those circuits for iRacing, it’s unlikely any refund will be offered, as they’re being opened up to more potential sim racers rather than being replaced or retired. Which is a good thing overall, even if you’ve recently paid $14.95 for access, as they’ve been a bit underutilised in the past (I say this having bought Snetterton and Motorsport Arena Oschersleben myself in the past).
Unless you’re happy just using them for time trials and AI driving, it’s been apparent that they don’t get the use they deserve (certainly Snetterton is rarely raced in official series). So by joining the base package, they’re much more likely to appear in regular rotation, particularly in the more entry-level championships like the MX-5s, PCC and Formula Vee etc.
Personally, if paying some money for circuits which later become free means that the likes of Ledenon and Winton are captured, preserved and available, then I’m fine with that. Especially if it means we’re not constantly forced to race the same well-known tracks featured in every sim racing title, simply because everyone wants Spa, Silverstone and the Nurburgring.
