Available as a Steam Early Access game for the PC since August 2023 and as a demo version for Xbox consoles, New Star GP gets a March 7th, 2024 release date for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.
The retro arcade racer will be available for the Xbox One and PS4 along with the Xbox Series X|S. Originally announced in 2022 from UK indie devs New Star Games, it’s taken a while for the full release to appear, with the career mode taking you through five decades of racing from the 1980s.
It’s an idea which is so obvious it’s overlooked by most racing games. And allows you to progress by upgrading your car and team as you move towards the modern day against 45 unique computer-controlled rivals. You’re also able to race the 17 track locations across a variety of championships with the option for 4 racers to compete in local split-screen multiplayer. Or set up your own custom races and series.
It’s not the first retro arcade racing game and won’t be the last, but the focus on accessible but impactful team management and race strategy adds depth which can be lacking from other examples in the genre.
The lack of online multiplayer is a little surprising for a modern game, but given that there are plenty of other racing games which can scratch that particular itch, the focus on single and local multiplayer is a positive in my personal opinion.
You can find New Star GP for the PC via Steam, the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles via the Microsoft Store, the PS4 via the PlayStation store, and the Switch via the Nintendo eShop. It’s priced at £24.99. You can see our previous coverage of New Star GP, here.
