If you’ve ever wanted to renact The Italian Job with classic racing cars, then you’ll soon get your chance as the Fiat Lingotto Test track is coming to Ages of Speed.
It’s a racing game which might have flown under the radar a little, as a lot of information is only available to Patreon supporters. But the website makes it clear that the focus is on classic cars, tracks and motorsport. And it’s being developed by Chris and Tony West, who have been developing games since the Vic 20 and Commodore 64 era
They’re previously worked on World Sports Cars and Racing Legends, neither of which made it to release as a full racing sim. And MacSpeedee – Ages of Speed will include circuits including the Opel Rennbahn, Brooklands, Bonneville and more, along with detailled caricatured versions of cars through the historic eras, which featured damage, dirt, engine management and more. And each vehicle will have a recorded history, reflected in the sale price.
The idea of racing games which take different approaches to implementing realistic physics, handling, and other details is a good one, and has been successful for the likes of Art of Rally. So Ages of Speed is definitely intriguing.
And while the Fiat Lingotto isn’t the only rooftop test track to have been built, it’s certainly the most well-known. After building the five story car factory was completed in 1923, the 1.5km test track was used until the building closed in 1982, after which it’s been used as a new public space with the oval still used for walking, jogging and electric vehicles with an integral rooftop garden. The Lingotto building also featured in the 1962 film Mafioso as the lead character was employed building cars.
