If you’re a fan of the original game in the series, or want to try out a different approach to motorsport strategy and management, Open Wheel Manager 2 goes onto Early Access in October, 2023.
The series is developed by Paprikash Games, with the original released in 2019, and it’s published by Microprose, who have been releasing simulation titles since 1982 (including the Grand Prix Manager sims in the 1990s).
As you might have imagined, the challenge involves managing a racing team, including hiring drivers and staff, securing sponsorships, building and developing cars, and then making decisions during the races to try and achieve the best possible results.
Drivers will gain experience, while staff may also change teams as you progress through each race and season. Obviously there’s no official license, as you might have guessed from both the name, and the existence of F1 Manager 2023. But the original Open Wheel Manager did allow you to edit drivers, team names and performance parameters, along with mod support via Steam Workshop.
Which would be interesting, as you could potentially replicate past seasons of F1, or even other championships.
Open Wheel Manager 2 will include 12 playable teams with 42 drivers and a choice of 6 engine suppliers, racing on 16 tracks around the world, with five different facilities you can build and upgrade alongside your car. Along with watching the race action in 3D, you can also pick the 2d overhead view, along with commentary calling out any significant events.
The plan is for Open Wheel Manager 2 to be in Early Access for between six months and a year, and there aren’t currently plans to change the price for the full release.
