A new title is being worked on by Original Fire Games, as the Circuit Superstars developers tease a new kart game. It was revealed in an image shared on social media, stating that every racing legend has an origin, alongside a racing kart. And since then, Alberto Mastretta has shared clips of the driver designs and customisable racing suits.
Circuit Superstars was the first game from the small team, which includes three members of the Mastretta family, with brothers Alberto and Carlos, and sister Carolina. It was in development for more than five years, eventually arriving on Steam Early Access back in March 2021, and getting a full release in October 2021.
The overhead racer has continued to be one of the most popular examples in the genre, published by Square Enix, and using tie-ins with Top Gear for content including free and paid DLC alongside celebrity events. Mainly because, like Art of Rally, it may use an overhead perspective, but the racing and handling is still realistic and challenging enough to let you develop your driving skills and feel like results are down to your performance rather than random luck.
What’s most interesting is the decision to build a new game rather than add vehicles to Circuit Superstars, and whether that’s to take a different approach to the view or graphics, base it on a different technical or physics foundation, or as a release which isn’t under the Square Enix banner. All of that is pure speculation until more details are released, but from an industry perspective it will be interesting to find out.
Either way, an overhead kart game from Original Fire Games could definitely be worth checking out when it’s closer to release. The quick steering, smaller tracks and approach required to get the best out of a kart definitely suits an isometric perspective.
In the meantime, Circuit Superstars is available for the PC via Steam, the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S via the Microsoft Store, the PlayStation 4 via the PlayStation store, and the Switch via the Nintendo eShop. And you can keep up with the latest Circuit Superstars news and updates, here.
