The first racing title from British indie developers New Star Games is now available for PC gamers, with New Star GP released on Steam Early Access.
It’s currently priced at £14.99, with an increase planned for the full release. And if you do invest now, you’re get an exclusive bonus with the Lucas 05 bodyshell. It’s purely cosmetic, but will be selectable when you’re starting career mode in the 1980s.
At present, the game is expected to be in Early Access for between two and four months. It currently includes 56 individual race events split into the 80s and 90s decades, but the plan is to add more eras, cars, tracks, rivals and rival mechanics for career mode, and also add more championship mode content.
As mentioned when New Star GP was announced, and when the Steam release date was revealed, it’s inspired by 90’s arcade racing games, and comes from the developer which previously released New Star Soccer, Retro Bowl and Retro Goal. It’s being published by Yorkshire-based Five Aces, and it’s apparently the biggest and most ambitious title that the studio has tackled.
With a small develop and publisher, you might already have guessed that the cars and circuits aren’t officionally licensed. So any seemingly familiar sections of tracks including Brisbane, Quebec and Cote D’Azur are probably entirely coincidental.
Along with the single player career mode, you can tackle championships alone, or with up to three human opponents in local split-screen multiplayer. And while the handling and accessibility is aimed at replicating an arcade feel, you’ll still get some deeper racing features including tyre choice and wear, reliability of parts, fuel load and your pit stop strategy.
New Star GP is available for the PC, and you can find it on Steam Early Access.
