We featured the retro-styled arcade racer when it was first announced, and you’ll be able to play it for yourself soon with New Star GP set to launch on August 8th, 2023. It’s also been confirmed with Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will also arrive this year.
From indie developers New Star Games, their first racing title will be released onto Steam Early Access for an initial period expected to be between two and four months, which is a lot shorter than many titles. Plans for the full version include adding other motorsport periods to the initial decades of the 1980’s and 1990’s, more cars, tracks and configurations, and a championship mode alongside the single player career.
Other new details include the fact that the career mode features 56 individual race events, while the championship mode will allow for single or split-screen multiplayer competition. And while the price still hasn’t been revealed, there will be a saving if you invest during the Early Access period, along with the opportunity to provide feedback and input for future development.
It’ll be interesting to see how New Star GP fares against similar arcade racing titles, as a number of developers have sought to bring back memories of their youth with 1990’s polygon racing games. And the lack of online racing against human opponents may put some people off, but if you have family or friends to share a screen with, it could be a decent alternative to digging out the Sega Saturn or Megadrive from the loft.
