The first Gran Turismo game was released for the PlayStation back on December 23rd, 1997, and Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed there’s a Gran Turismo 7 25th Anniversary update coming soon, some time before the end of November.
It’s probably timed to coincide with the Gran Turismo World Series Grand Finals in Monaco, which take place on November 24-27th. And it follows the Gran Turismo 7 25th Anniversary Edition, which was released at launch with extras including a SteelBook case, a Toyota GR Yaris with country-specific livery, the official soundtrack, plus the Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept Stealth Model, Porche 917 Living Legend and Toyota Super GT500 #97 Castrol TOM’s cars.
But now everyone will be able to celebrate with three cars new coming to the game
The traditional silhouette teaser image shared by Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi is a tricky one.
Top left looks like it might possibly be Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth or Sierra RS Cosworth 4×4 which would explain the distinctive bonnet louvres, without also having the massive ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler of the original RS500 model. And losing the rear spoiler for a smaller version actually made the two-wheel drive Sapphire slightly faster in a straight line. It’ll also be a Gran Turismo debut for the Sierra Cosworth.
Top right is tricky, as the saloon shape isn’t particularly unusual. But is does look a lot like a BMW M2 Competition, which currently isn’t in the existing car roster.
And at the bottom, many people have suggests that it could be a Nissan Silvia S14 K’s Aero, which would explain the retro 1990s rear wing.
Three new cars isn’t much for a 25th anniversary, especially as there are already a number of Silvias in Gran Turismo 7, including an S14 K’s Type S. Although a 1996 model did appear in every Gran Turismo game up to GT Sport, including the original release. So it’s more of a call back to the past than either the Ford or BMW.
But we’ll have to wait and see if the guesses prove correct, or whether Polyphony Digital have any surprises in store. As someone who bought an original PlayStation shortly after launch for Gran Turismo among other titles, the 25th Anniversary makes me feel nostalgic, and old.
