If you’ve invested in the new World Superbike title, you’ll be pleased to see that the new SBK 22 patch fixes career mode results. Until now, there has been an intermittent issue with the game simply ordering the fastest lap times, rather than the proper finishing order for Race 1 and the Superpole Race.
It’s good that Milestone have responded quickly to a fairly sizeable issue for anyone looking to play through a WorldSBK season or race weekend. And it also comes with some minor fixes, and the guided set-up option now becoming available for the Superpole Race.
Still, it’s a fairly big problem to have slipped through playtesting, especially when the game has been seen as underwhelming by a lot of motorcycle fans. As someone who loved the Superbike games back in 1999 and 2000, it’s a real pity that the understandable decision to utilise the platform of the current MotoGP title has resulted in something which feels more like a reskin than a standalone title.
The issue of missing support classes is something which could potentially be solved in a DLC package or update, as often has happened with the MotoGP titles. The Supersport 300 class is a particularly big omission as it’s a proving ground for your riders which has also produced the first female solo road racing world champion in Ana Carrasco.
But the bigger problem is that the handling model seems identical to MotoGP. Given that superbikes uses production-based machines, while GP bikes are pure prototypes, you’d expect to feel the difference between the two. And there’s a massive crossover between fans of both series, so the intended customers for both games is going to be very similar. And the basic handling model isn’t something that’s easy to change retrospectively.
