PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners can improve the look of the Superstar Racing Experience, with a new SRX: The Game next gen console update released.
Developed by Monster Games as the licensed virtual version of the American racing series which launched in 2021, it was available to buy for a newer console, but you didn’t get any benefits or upgrades from the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

Apparently that’s now changed, with the Xbox Series X|S automatically getting an update to include a higher resolution, 60 frames per second, and improved audio. A PlayStation 5 edition is now officially available and listed via the PS5 store, and if you own the PS4 version, you can upgrade it for free (there’s a helpful guide on how to do this for any game where it’s available, here).
The game features the cars, tracks and drivers from the 2021 season, and received some July content updates and DLC following the release in May 2021. It’s good to see a free and relatively easy upgrade for both Xbox Series X|S and PS5 owners, as that’s not guaranteed for every racing title. And it might encourage more people to give it a try.
If you’re not famailiar with the SRX series, founders include Tony Stewart and it began with a six race debut season. The concept was to host 90 minute races at shorter circuits than NASCAR, and randomly pairing drivers and crew chiefs for each race. So you wouldn’t know who might team up for events at Stafford Motor Speedway or Knoxville Raceway.
The cars are powered by Ilmor V8 396 engines (also used in the ARCA Menards series), with low downforce designs, and each driver being allocated their vehicle before every event in a random draw.
Drivers included Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte, Marco Andretti, Helio Castoneves, Paul Tracy, Tony Kanaan and more, with wins going to Stewart, Andretti, Ernie Francis Jr, Doug Coby, and Chase Elliott. Ironically, the first champion was Stewart.
