There’s a new addition to the Porsche family, and the GT3 field, as the Porsche 911 GT3 R is coming to iRacing in the 2021 Season 3 build. The news was revealed during the finale of the iRacing Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup, and it’s likely to be a popular choice for GT3 sim racers.
The current model of the Porsche 911 GT3 R (991) features a water-cooled flat-six 4.0 litre boxer engine at the rear of the car, which puts out a maximum of 550bhp depending on the balance of power for a particular series. The power goes through a six-speed sequential gearbox, and stopping comes courtesy of six-piston aluminium monobloc racing brake calipers in the front, with four piston units at the rear.
It also gained a larger diffuser, double wishbone front suspension, larger front tyres, and an electro-hydraulically actuated clutch among other features justifying the customer price of €459,000 before tax. And this has helped it to win twice at the Spa 24 Hours, Bathurst 12 Hour, and in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, including two victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring.
So it’s good news for Porsche GT3 fans. It’ll be facing existing options including the Mercedes-AMG GT3, Audi R8 LMS GT3, McLaren MP4-12C GT3, new BMW M4 GT3, the Ferrari 488 GT3, and the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO.
It also makes sense if you want to work your way through the Porsche family on iRacing, which starts with the 718 Cayman GT4 and 911 GT3 Cup cars, and also includes the 911 RSR and 919 LMP1.
