It’s taken a little bit of time but more people can enjoy some futuristic combat racing with PACER released for the Xbox One.
Originally launched for the PC and PS4 back in October 2020, PACER is a fun arcade racer obviously inspired by the classic Wipeout series. And developers R8 Games includes some of the people who worked on those titles, along with the music of original composer Tim Wright.
PlayStation 4 owners most recently had access to the Wipeout Omega Collection in 2017, but it could be a new experience for those with a Microsoft console. The most recent game update was released in December with special festive items and a variety of single and multi-player fixes. And the style of game will hold special memories for gamers growing up during the 1990s, with the original Psygnosis title being hugely important to the original PlayStation, and even appearing in the 1995 film Hackers.
If you haven’t seen our previous coverage of the game, then the concept is pretty simple. Pick from 5 craft and teams, select the weapons you want to power via pickups on track, and use them along with airbrakes and boost to try to take victory in a single player mode or against up to 9 other players in online multiplayer.
You also get 14 circuits, with night, mirrored and reverse variations to keep it interesting. And graphically it’s fast and smooth (in our experience of the PC version), with a good sensation of speed as you barrel into corners way too fast.
PACER is available for the Xbox One via the Microsoft Store, the PS4 via the PlayStation Store, and the PC via Steam. It’s currently discounted by 20-40% depending on the platform until the 10th March (PS4), 15th March (Steam), and 23rd March (Xbox One).
