Fancy trying out a vintage motocross game from 2004 for nothing right now? MX Unleashed is free on Xbox games with Gold right now, although the discount hasn’t been officially announced or promoted anywhere.
We’re not sure whether it’s an error or not, as MX Unleashed was officially made available for free with Xbox Games With Gold between August 1st and 15th, 2020.
Either way, you can grab the game now which was released for the original Xbox, but is backwards compatible with the Xbox One.

The game itself was the final of a trilogy released by THQ (the others were MX 2002 featuring Ricky Carmichael and MX Superfly). It’s notable as Rainbow Studios took over development from Locomotive Games, and it was followed by the first of the MX vs ATV series in 2005.
Rainbow Studios most recent releases were Monster Jam Steel Titans in 2019, and MX vs ATV All Out in 2018. Locomotive Games was closed by THQ in 2008.
Is it worth downloading MX Unleashed? It really depends on how much you enjoy old motocross games, with a career mode to unlock new races by finishing on the podium, and a freestyle mode with challenges to complete.
It was a popular game when originally released, and got a good response from reviewers, including for the realistic physics. But the praise for the graphics and controls probably isn’t quite as impressive almost 20 years later.Ultimately, it’s free, so the only cost is your time and bandwith to try it out!
If you want a more modern comparison, then you can check out all our news and coverage of MX vs ATV All Out here. The 2018 game is available for the PC via Steam, Xbox One via the Microsoft Store and PS4 via the PlayStation Store.
Retro collectors like me who would prefer a boxed copy of MX Unleashed for their gaming room shelves can find it on Amazon or eBay for the original Xbox and PS2.
