If you don’t spend much time watching motorsport, you might not appreciate the impact that a safety car can have on a race. But the F1 2020 Safety Car Guide Video might even give experienced sim racers some new ideas about how to use it as an opportunity to get a better result.
The tips from Codemasters include explaining what the Safety Car is, and how the procedure works when it’s brought on track. And also how to manage your car and make the best of the big opportunities it can provide.
If you’re a motorsport fan, or an experienced sim racer, you’ll probably have experienced both safety cars, and virtual safety cars, on a variety of occasions. And seen firsthand how it can make a huge difference to the race, especially if you’re leading ot trying to catch up at the back of the field.
The biggest mistake is to switch off and stop paying attention. It’s bad enough crashing during a race, but crashing under safety car conditions is worse, especially if you collide into another car because you’re not paying attention.
Incidentally, the Mercedes-AMG driver of the safety car is former DTM driver Bernd Maylander, who has led more than 700 F1 laps since he started in 2000. And only missed one race through injury across those 20 years.
