If you want to experience Playground Games Australian driving title, you’ll need to do it soon, with a Forza Horizon 3 sale and end of life date announced.
Forza Horizon 3 will reach end of life status on September 27th, 2020. This means that the game and all associated DLC will no longer be available for purchase. It also means support and updates are effectively ended, although you can still play the game, including online. Downloads will still be available for the game and any DLC you already own before that date.
On the positive side, the Forza Horizon 3 Standard and Ultimate Editions will be heavily discounted until the game is removed from sale, four years after it was originall released. The Forza Horizon 3 Standard Edition is 67% off at £6.59 on the Microsoft Store with Xbox Play Anywhere for Xbox One and PC. And the Forza Horizon 3 Ultimate Edition has dropped by 70% down to £17.99 on the Microsoft Store, again for the Xbox One and PC.
Unfortunately individual DLC packs haven’t yet been discounted. But it may mean that Forza Horizon 3 will be one of the free September Xbox Games With Gold, which we saw happen when Forza Motorsport 6 reached End of Life, for example.
Obviously you’ll still be able to buy physical editions of Forza Horizon 3, and any DLC included in your purchase will still be redeemable. And you’ll also still be able to buy physical cards to redeem for DLC and Season Passes for a while. But you might find these stay at the original purchase price, or even increase in cost when the digital versions aren’t available.
It’s understandably that most games will come to an end at some point. Even if the cost of upkeep and servers, or the need to keep working on patches for compatibility isn’t a problem, there are also areas like licensing agreements which may make it easier to take games from sale after a few years. Especially if it encourages the final few holdouts to get around to buying the next game in the series.
Obviously it’s frustrating if DLC is linked to the last acheivements you’ve failed to unlock, but at least by having a rolling 4 years schedule for both Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon titles, Microsoft and Turn 10 Studios/Playground Games make it easier for most people to realise that they have a limited time to finish everything. Even if it means I’ll always be one achievement short on Forza Horizon 2.
