Another major sporting event has switched to a virtual alternative with the Special Olympics USA holding a Forza Motorsport 7 event on May 30th, 2020. The 2020 Special Olympics Xbox Virtual Gaming Event will feature more than 35 athletes representing 11 US states.
Microsoft has previously partnered with Special Olympics USA since 2014, and the games previously held a Forza Motorsport 7 tournament in 2018. That event saw athletes from four states compete head-to-head at a tournment held at the University of Washington.
As the official press release from the Special Olympics explains
“With athletic training and competitions currently postponed due to COVID-19, Special Olympics is looking for new ways to connect, compete, and just have fun. Enveloping this event will be stories of the athletes themselves—allowing a broad fanbase to know who they are, what they care about, how they are feeling—and cheer them on as they discover new community and excitement in playing Forza Motorsport 7”
The 2020 Special Olympics Xbox Virtual Gaming Event will be available to watch as a livestream on Mixer, Twitch and Xbox Youtube. It will start from 12pm, Pacific Time / 3pm Eastern Time, and there will also be the first ever global Special Olympics award ceremony, which will take place in Minecraft after the gaming event has completed.
It’s great to see virtual motorsport being used by both professional race series and other sporting organisations to provide fun and entertainment for both athletes and fans during a difficult time.
