The second event with professional MotoGP riders competing online saw some close racing as MotoGP Virtual Race 2 took place on Sunday, April 12th, 2020.
The competitors included race one winner Alex Marquez, and his older brother, the 6-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez. Other riders returning from the first MotoGP Virtual race on March 29th included Francesco Bagnaia, Maverick Vinales and Fabio Quatararo. These were the top five last time out, and they’re now joined by five new challengers.
So, MotoGP Virtual Race 2 saw an online debut for Danilo Petrucci and Michele Pirro (possibly after some tips from new Ducati Corse eSports rider Andrea Saveri), Tito Rabat, Takaaki Nakagami, and the legendary Valentino Rossi.
The chosen venue for the race was the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. And the first corner saw chaos as almost the whole field collided. And the action continued throughout the race, coming down to a last lap battle between two riders for the lead.
With all motorsport indefinitely postponed, it will be interesting to see how riders might improve by competing in the #StayAtHomeGP series, and who may be practicing more in-between races.
The MotoGP eSport draft selection has also recently been completed with each official race team choosing one rider to participate, along with a reserve choice.
Ducati has picked reigning eSport champion Andrea Saveri (AndrewZH), while Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP continue with 2019 rider and double eSport champion Tastevere73, and Castrol LCR Honda will stick with their choice from last year, Moe.
