Good news for Polyphony Digital, and race fans, as Gran Turismo Sport leads first week sales charts in the UK. As revealed by Chart-Track, the flagship Sony race title has knocked FIFA 18 from the top spot. And it’s also managed to outsell the initial figures for the first 1998 Gran Turismo game, and the 2013 release of Gran Turismo 6.
It was always going to struggle a bit to match the initial sales of 2010’s blockbuster Gran Turismo 5, which sold three times as many copies in the first week of release as Gran Turismo Sport.
But there’s more good news for race fans as Forza Motorsport 7 continues to hold onto a top ten spot, currently in ninth.
Which means racing games on both of the main console platforms are popular enough to compete with the biggest titles in other genres. And that means we’ll continue to see games in both those franchises, as well as other competitors, to try and capture some of those sales. Which is a good thing overall, whether you’re racing on a PlayStation 4, an Xbox One, or you’re watching it all from behind a PC sim racing rig.
