As the nights draw in and October comes to its traditionally spooky close, the month has heralded the release of a new trailer for Slightly Mad Studios’ Project CARS.
Demonstrating the dynamic weather and time-of-day systems at a superb sim-racing location, the video was first shown in London during the 2014 Golden Joystick Awards.
Halloween is here…
Beginning well with a foreboding and eerie glimpse of Nürburg Castle, the clouds thicken and the light quickly falls to show a series of GT cars facing off through the Eifel forests and along the full Green Hell – the mighty Nordschleife.
Nowadays almost an expected feature for any game (or ‘simulator’), the venue continues to play host to a 24-hour event that this year saw a field of 165 cars and hundreds of competitors from the 2, 3 and 4-driver teams. The awe-inspiring race will return next year as the 2015 ADAC Zurich 24-Hour, making an earlier appearance in May. Where else would you see a fan-favourite 1980s Opel Manta – replete with fox tail! – running with the most advanced modern-day racing machines?!

Back to the video, beyond the impressively realistic shadows, lighting and effects, the sounds are pleasingly also brought to the fore in this Halloween trailer. Despite the skilful editing, they lose some of their finer qualities when compared to playing live but allowing for the stylisation, give a good impression of the reality too. After witnessing several hundred work-in-progress builds, I still get a kick out of the details. Even in their advanced yet unfinished state, these cars breathe…

Released in boxed form as well as via a download on Steam, Project CARS’ revised delivery dates for the PC, PlayStation 4 and XBOX One versions are March 17th in North America and March 20th in Europe.
Offered with additional pre-release content the game can be ordered today and includes a ‘Limited Edition‘ option that adds a behind-the-scenes book, Project CARS: By Racers 4 Racers.
